Why is Hester Prynne unable to tell Pearl the meaning of the Scarlet Letter?

Just as the scarlet letter is a symbol of Hester's 'sin', Pearl is also a living symbol of the same. To tell Pearl that she is a living version of the symbol of 'sin' is something that Hester is unable to do as she does not want her daughter to know she represents sin.
