Why are Macs and Apple related products so expensive.?

I was thinking about migrating from a PC to a Mac and was taken aback with the high costs. It's almost double if I wanted the speed and hard drive of what I have now. I looked around some more a at a few G5 towers and the prices are crazy high? Is this because of a market share or manufacturing woes or what? Why is everything Apple so expensive?
